About Nelson's Alutiiq Charters
Nelson's Alutiiq Charters is run by Marvin Nelson, an Alutiiq Native who grew up in the village of Afognak until the 1964 Good Friday earthquake and tsunami destroyed it, after which he resettled in Port Lions on Kodiak Island. His father put him on the water at age five, and he went on to fish Alaska commercially for salmon, crab, herring, and halibut for 30 years.
A Coast Guard-licensed charter skipper for a decade, Marvin first worked with Chihuly's Charters out of Ninilchik before starting his own operation. He runs day trips for halibut, salmon, and rockfish aboard the Little Tess for up to six anglers, with whales, otters, seals, and bears often part of the ride, aiming to keep Kodiak Island fishing affordable.
