About Moose Hunting in Alaska

Alaska-Yukon moose are the world's largest, with trophy bulls carrying racks exceeding 70 inches wide. The Kenai Peninsula, Susitna Valley, and Interior Alaska produce exceptional moose. Non-residents must be accompanied by a licensed Alaska guide or resident family member for moose hunting. Hunts are intensive — the terrain is brutal, the animals are massive, and meat handling is a serious logistical challenge.

What you need to know

  • Late September (rut peak) is when big bulls are most visible and least wary — this is the prime booking window.
  • Kenai Peninsula moose hunts are highly sought after and guide permits are limited — book 1–2 years in advance.
  • Water-access hunts via raft or boat dramatically reduce pack-out difficulty.
