Dall sheep hunting is widely considered the most demanding and prestigious mountain hunt in North America. Pure-white rams inhabiting the Alaska and Brooks Ranges at elevations up to 8,000 feet. Non-residents must hunt with a licensed Alaska guide. The combination of physical difficulty, hunting technique, and the pure wilderness setting makes Dall sheep the bucket-list hunt for serious mountain hunters. Tags are over-the-counter — no lottery required.

What you need to know

  • Train for 6+ months before a Dall sheep hunt — you need to be capable of 10-mile days with a 60 lb pack in rugged terrain.
  • Brooks Range hunts are the most remote and typically produce the best trophy quality.
  • Glass-and-stalk hunting requires identifying full-curl rams at distance — your guide's glassing ability is everything.
  • Late August through mid-September gives the best weather window and bachelor groups are still consolidated.
  • Tags are over the counter — no lottery, which makes planning simpler than sheep hunts in the Lower 48.
