Master guide Gary "Butch" King has specialized in guided brown bear and moose hunts on the remote Alaska Peninsula since 1971, and he and his wife Kathy have outfitted those hunts from Wildman Lake Lodge since 1996. The area is managed for trophy brown bear, with seasons limited to two 10-day hunts a year — October on odd years, May on even — and one guide per hunter.
The site's tally through the 2023 season: 159 ten-and-eleven-foot-class brown bears taken by clients, including 13 of the top 25 Alaska brown bear in the SCI record book and two past world records. September moose hunts run from fly-out tent camps, glassing and calling rutting bulls in country producing 60-80 inch antlers; hunters choose tented wilderness camps, remote cabins or lodge-based riverboat hunts.
