Peace of Selby Wilderness

This lodge — which its own website calls Peace of Selby Wilderness — sits on Selby Lake inside Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, north of the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Range. The main lodge was built in 1981 from white spruce logs cut in the surrounding forest.

Hosts Art and Damaris Mortvedt bring unusual resumes: Art is an Alaska registered guide, Explorers Club member, and bush pilot with more than 6,000 hours of Alaska flying and over 20 years of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions; Damaris has spent over 40 years in Alaska, taught in remote Indigenous villages, and cooked professionally in Antarctica. Trips center on trekking, fishing, canoeing, rafting, and wildlife viewing, with traditional crafts and cultural knowledge woven in.
