Arctic Wild was founded in Fairbanks in 1998 by Ron Yarnell, who had guided for 30 years with his prior company, Wilderness Alaska Mexico. Today it is a family business owned by husband and wife Michael Wald and Sally Andersen — Wald an early Arctic Wild guide who became a partner in 2007.
The company guides one- to three-week rafting, canoeing, packrafting, backpacking, and base camp trips in Alaska's remotest country: the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Gates of the Arctic, the Western Arctic, and beyond. Groups stay small (1 to 8), guides train in Leave No Trace with Wilderness First Responder and swiftwater rescue certifications, and the company donates profits to conservation organizations.
