Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises traces to 1971, when Stan and Mary Helen Stephens started North Star Marine Charters, running fishing and hunting trips from the 26-foot M/V Mary Helen. The operation turned to glacier and wildlife touring in 1978, became Stan Stephens Charters, and took its current name in 2003. Over the years the family has run tour boats out of Valdez, Whittier, and Cordova and operated the Growler Island wilderness camp for 15 years.
After the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill, Stan committed to working with industry to protect Prince William Sound, and environmental stewardship remains central. Today the company runs 6-hour Columbia Glacier and 7.5-hour Meares Glacier cruises from Valdez, watching for orcas, humpbacks, Steller sea lions, and puffins, and encourages guests to learn about the region's Alutiiq/Sugpiaq peoples.
