Big Dan's Fishing Charters is owned by Dan and Sarah Spies. Dan grew up on a farm in Russell, Kansas, spent 30 years in construction — 17 of them running his own company — and moved that business to Soldotna in 2009 before buying his first boat in 2013 and switching to fishing full time. He took the Homer Halibut Derby's largest-halibut prize two years running, including a 251-pound fish in 2017. Sarah, raised in a big outdoors-minded family, manages bookings and keeps the operation running.
The fleet runs four boats out of Homer: the 50-foot catamaran Double Down and 42-foot catamaran Game Changer, each carrying 12, plus 31-foot six-packs Wanka and Blackjack. Trips target halibut, salmon, rockfish, lingcod, and Pacific cod with an individualized, no-cattle-boat approach.
