North Country Charters has been fishing Kachemak Bay and Cook Inlet out of Homer since 1979 and bills itself as one of the town's longest-running charter operations. Today it is locally and woman co-owned, run by what it calls the next generation of Homer fishermen and women — locals who grew up on the docks, including Ben Martin, son of the original owners, who grew up on the Homer Spit.
It is a multi-boat, owner-operator fleet: Clay Duda captains the Irish Mist, Jay Keller — born and raised in Homer and a lifelong commercial fisherman — runs the 35-foot Bertram Tuff Stuff, Al Kitner co-owns the Beau Soleil, and Pelle Bergstrom skippers the Storm Petrel. Trips target halibut, salmon, and cod, with first-timers and families as welcome as seasoned anglers.
