About Alaska Wilderness Enterprises

Alaska Wilderness Enterprises was established in 1982 by Joe Letarte, an Alaska master guide who came to the state in 1979, homesteaded 40 acres, and built an off-grid log cabin with hand tools. A wilderness EMT who spends more than 200 days a year guiding and scouting, Letarte describes a life fully dependent on hunting, fishing, and trapping.

The outfit hunts Dall sheep, moose, grizzly, caribou, wolf, and wolverine in the Alaska Range; brown bear, black bear, and mountain goat near Yakutat; and black bear across a 4.3-million-acre Yukon River Valley concession the site calls one of the largest in the world.

Season & Booking

Alaska hunting seasons vary significantly by Game Management Unit and species. Confirm current seasons with ADF&G and book well in advance — quality outfitters fill 6–18 months ahead for peak species. Non-residents must be accompanied by a licensed guide or qualifying Alaska resident for most big game species.
