About Barela's Alaskan Outfitters

Peter Barela grew up bowhunting in Colorado, moved to Alaska in 1990, and began guiding in 1993 after helping hunting guides build their camps. He started Barela's Alaskan Outfitters in 2007 and is now in his fourth decade of guiding, based out of Yakutat.

The outfit runs brown bear, black bear, mountain goat, and moose hunts on federal concession areas in the Tongass National Forest and on more than 55,000 acres of private land bordering Wrangell–St. Elias National Park. Barela is a fair-chase believer who keeps safety front and center: he maintains EMT certification, holds a Coast Guard captain's license, and requires his staff to train in first aid, CPR, and mountain survival.
