Angoon, Alaska

Angoon is the only community on Admiralty Island, home to the highest density of brown bears in North America — roughly one bear per square mile across the island's 1,600-strong population. The Tlingit name Xootsnoowú means 'Fortress of the Bears.' Chatham Strait and the island's interior streams offer outstanding halibut, all five species of Pacific salmon, and rainbow trout. The Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area draws wildlife watchers from around the world. Remote fly-in lodges at Pybus Bay and Killisnoo Island round out a wilderness experience unlike anything else in Southeast Alaska.
