Kaktovik, Alaska

Kaktovik on Barter Island is the only community inside the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In late September and October, polar bears congregate at the offshore bowhead whale bone pile, making Kaktovik one of the world's best polar bear viewing locations. The Porcupine caribou herd (one of North America's largest at 200,000+ animals) migrates through. Arctic char fishing in the Hulahula and Canning Rivers is world-class. Fly-in from Fairbanks.
